When Should I Worry About Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins can be cosmetic, but they may also signal an underlying vein condition. Learn which warning signs deserve attention.
Varicose veins are extremely common, and many people live with them comfortably for years. But not every varicose vein is purely cosmetic — some are an outward sign of an underlying circulation problem that benefits from medical evaluation.
Warning signs that deserve a closer look
Pain, throbbing, or aching over a varicose vein; persistent swelling near the ankle; skin that becomes discolored, hardened, or itchy; bleeding from a surface vein; or a non-healing wound near the lower leg are all reasons to schedule a vein evaluation.
Why earlier is usually better
Chronic venous insufficiency tends to progress slowly. Treating the underlying reflux earlier can help relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of complications such as skin changes or venous ulcers.
What an evaluation looks like
A typical first visit includes a review of your symptoms, a physical exam, and — when appropriate — a duplex ultrasound to map blood flow in the leg veins. From there, your provider can discuss whether conservative care, in-office treatment, or simple monitoring is the best path forward.
