What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a commonly used treatment for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Learn how it works and what patients can expect.

3 min read

Sclerotherapy is one of the most established treatments for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. It is performed in-office, requires no general anesthesia, and most patients return to their normal activities the same day.

How it works

A very fine needle is used to inject a medical solution directly into the target vein. The solution irritates the vein lining, causing it to gently collapse and close. Over the following weeks, the body absorbs the treated vein and surface appearance fades.

What to expect during a session

A typical session lasts 20–45 minutes depending on the number of veins treated. Most patients describe the sensation as a series of small stings. Compression stockings are usually recommended for a short period afterward to support healing.

Results and follow-up

More than one session is often needed to achieve the desired appearance, especially for larger areas. Results develop gradually over several weeks. Maintenance treatments may be recommended over time, since sclerotherapy treats existing veins but does not prevent new ones from forming.
